Routing Questions & Answered - Beginner Level

Q: I have noticed that some router bits come with a ball bearing, what is the exact purpose of this component?

Q: What are the benefits to using a larger shank diameter when routing?

Q: When would I choose to use router bits with a smaller diameter shaft (shank)?

A: The ball bearing pilot assists routing along the edge of the wood thereby preventing one from cutting too deeply into the wood ensuring a most precise cut. This component is always featured on router bits used for template or pattern routing

A: When you use a larger shank diameter there will be considerably less vibration and chatter allowing you to achieve significantly smoother results. In addition, being thicker means better durability – allowing your router bits purchased from precisionbits.com to last even longer!

A: Because some Routers on the market will only take router bits of 1/4" diameter, when stability is not a factor, one may choose the smaller shank diameter size for more universal compatibility. In addition, some router bits are only available for purchase in smaller shank sizes, such as; router bits with shank bearings as well as router bits that are required to complete smaller projects (which are not possible with larger shank diameter).
